FashionLab is for the students who love to be creative and have an interest in fashion! Learn about the importance of sustainability within the fashion industry and how they can still enjoy fashion in a responsible way. The students will continue to enhance their design, making and textile skills, leaving the course with a fabulous handmade garment to be proud of and that will demonstrate everything they have learnt over the term. A wonderful selection of donated deadstock designer fabrics will be available for the students to pick from to use, from designers such as Alexander McQueen, Brogger and Preen. Classes are taught by Jasmine and Elena on Saturdays, and Tshala and Tiana on Sundays.

Project Brief for Autumn 2024 Term:

Think of a location and an activity. It could be something from a film. Research and design an outfit that would be ideal to wear within this location whilst participating in this activity. What sort of fabrics would be appropriate? What type of silhouettes and styles make sense? What details should the garment have? How can the design reflect aspects of the environment and the activity.

This term, there will be x2 skills based lessons suitable for all levels.

Example Brief:

Imagine that...

You are attending your fantasy Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum in New York (think V&A), but to attend you must design and make your outfit.

What will your theme be? A historical event, a place, your favourite film?

Who will be your muse?

Children’s Contemporary Art Club at TFS for ages 7-11

Our art club is a fun and experimental space where children learn new techniques and skills inspired by famous artworks and artists. Our tutor Jodie, a practising artist with a professional background working in leading contemporary and modern art galleries aims to inspire children and unleash their inner creative.
Previous drawing skills not required, just a love of art and an open mind.

This term we are beginning by diving into Fauvism and Surrealism focussing on the artist Joan Miró and even looking at why his dreamlike patterned paintings managed to upset the establishment.

We believe the young mind absorbs more when the hands are busy so all this newly acquired knowledge soaks in sideways whilst the children are working in their personal hardback sketchbooks, building sculptures and installations, being their own performance art or painting on canvas.

All materials supplied by TFS, just bring an apron or old shirt.

Don't forget our online workshops

Our sewing classes are open to beginners and experienced fashionistas.

What we provide: The use of new and fully serviced Janome 725s sewing machines, scissors, tools and threads etc. Students can use free donated fabrics as part of our Circularity Bank or bring in their own.

What to expect from our sewing classes:

We believe in giving substance and sustainability awareness to each sewing project by encouraging open and enquiring creative minds in a structured environment. Each week we will give the children another aspect of fashion experience through an activity to give a solid base to their new found skill set. Please check the individual class details to see what they will be up to each week.

We will be working on sewing skills to improve the children’s technical ability, which will then be incorporated into personal projects.

Your child will have their own fashion work station with all equipment, machinery, chair, table etc sanitised before each class.

Activities include:

  • Learning to sew on a machine

  • Drawing fashion ideas

  • Draping fabrics on a mannequin stand to create designs

  • Pinning and cutting fabrics

  • Sustainability awareness

  • New sewing techniques

  • Making own garment

At the end of term they will come home with:

  • Design sheets, sustainable fabric awareness and technical sewing samples

  • A simple completed garment designed and made by them

  • Digital certificate of completion (80%+ attendance)

We will help them develop skills in:

  • Sustainable design awareness
